Aviation Oil

For the majority of aircraft piston engines the selection of the right grade is important to maximize engine performance and engine life. The AeroShell Oil and AeroShell W Oils come in four grades: 65 and W65; 80 and W80 and W80 Plus; 100 and W100 and W100 Plus; 120 and W120. The grades differ only by viscosity and thus cover the needs of all reciprocating engines now in airline and general aviation operation.

South Minnesota Lubes stocks all four grades of Piston Engine Oils. AeroShell straight mineral oils are blended from selected high viscosity index base stocks. These oils do not contain additives except for a small quantity of pourpoint depressant (which is added when improved fluidity at very low temperature is required) and an anti-oxidant.

AeroShell W Oils were the first non-ash dispersant oils to be used in aircraft piston engines. They combine non-metallic additives with selected high viscosity index base stocks to give exceptional stability, dispersancy and anti-foaming performance. These additives leave no metallic ash residues that can lead to deposit formation in combustion chambers and on spark plugs, which can cause pre-ignition and possible engine failure.

AeroShell 15W50 is a unique blend of high quality mineral oil and over 50% synthetic hydrocarbon base stocks, plus the AeroShell Oil W ashless dispersant additive system. This semi-synthetic blend offers high performance in a wide variety of applications and conditions. AeroShell 15W50 provides outstanding wear protection for critical camshafts, lifters and other high wear components.

South Minnesota Lubes offers Turbine Oils too. AeroShell 500, 555, 560 and 750 is available. AeroShell Turbine Oil 500 is a 5 centistoke synthetic hindered ester oil incorporating a carefully selected and balanced combination of additives to improve thermal and oxidation stability and metal passivation. AeroShell 555 is advanced 5 centistoke synthetic hindered ester oil incorporating a finely balanced blend of additives to improve thermal and oxidation stability and to increase the load carrying ability of the base oil. AeroShell Turbine Oil 560 is a third generation, high performance, low coking 5 centistoke synthetic hindered ester oil incorporating a carefully selected and finely balanced combination of additives to improve thermal and oxidation stability.

AeroShell Oil 15W-50

Aeroshell Oil W15 - 50 is a premium semi-synthetic multigrade ashless dispersant oil specifically developed for aviation piston engines. AeroShell Oil W 15W-50 is a special blend of a high quality mineral oil and synthetic hydrocarbons with an advanced additive package that has been specifically formulated for multigrade applications. The combination of non-metallic anti-wear additives and selected high viscosity index mineral and synthetic base oils, give exceptional stability, dispersancy and anti-foaming performance. The advanced additive package in AeroShell W 15W-50 provides excellent protection to engines operating at extreme ambient temperatures. The ashless anti-wear additive package provides exceptional wear protection for camshafts and lifters and other wearing surfaces. AeroShell W 15W-50 has become very popular amongst engine manufacturers and operators alike. In order to cater for those Lycoming engines that need improved load carrying, the Lycoming LW 16702 antiwear additive has been incorporated into the formulation thus eliminating the need for supplemental additive addition.

AeroShell Oil 65, 80, 100
Straight Grade Engine Oils

AeroShell Oils 65, 80, 100 and 120 are straight mineral oils blended from selected high viscosity index base oils. These oils do not contain any additives except for very small amounts of pour point depressant (which aids to improve fluidity at very low temperatures) and an anti-oxidant. AeroShell Oils 65, 80, 100 and 120 are approved for all aviation piston engines of civil aircraft when the use of an oil not containing a dispersant additive is required; however, they should also be used during the break-in of a new aviation piston engine or those recently overhauled. The specially blended High Viscosity Index base oils in AeroShell Oil 65, 80, 100 and 120 have been designed to provide effective protection to engine components compared to conventional mineral oils. This ensures complete confidence and peace of mind knowing that your aircraft will perform reliably in between scheduled overhauls. AeroShell Oils 65, 80, 100 and 120 are produced to meet fully the SAE specification J-1966 (Grades SAE 30, 40, 50 and 60  respectively). Furthermore, they all have military qualification approval and are listed on the Qualified Products List (QPL) issued by the US Navy and on the Technically Acceptable Products List (TAPL) issued by the UK Ministry of  Defense.

AeroShell Oil W120

AeroShell Oils W80, W100 and W120 are ashless dispersant oils specifically developed for aviation piston engines. They combine non-metallic additives with selected high viscosity index base oils to give exceptional stability, dispersancy and anti-foaming performance. No general rule exists for every engine type when choosing the correct grade of oil; however, based on the average ambient outside temperature at engine start-up the most common grades are SAE 40, SAE 50 and SAE 60, which equates to AeroShell Oil W80, W100 and W120 respectively.  Traditionally, the choice is associated with climatic zones - AeroShell W80 for cold climate regions (-17 - 21°C), AeroShell Oil W100 for temperate regions (15 - 30°C) and AeroShell Oil W120 for warmer climates (above 26°C). AeroShell Oils W65, W80, W100 and W120 are produced to meet fully the SAE specification J-1899 (Grades SAE 30, 40, 50 and 60 respectively). Furthermore, they all have military qualification approval and are listed on the Qualified Products List (QPL) issued by the US Navy and on the Technically Acceptable Products List (TAPL) issued by the UK Ministry of Defence. The blending plants employed to manufacture these oils also hold the approval of the specification authorities and this ensures that the high quality standard is always maintained.
